How to Give Your Mind and Body a Real Reset (Even If You Don’t Have Much Time)

Let’s be honest…
Most people don’t need another self-care checklist!

When you are already overwhelmed, exhausted, and running on empty, the idea of adding more to your plate—even if it’s “good for you”—can feel like too much. Can you relate?

What you actually need… is a reset.

Not a full week off.
Not a silent retreat in the mountains.
But small, intentional moments that help your nervous system come back to safety.

Because burnout isn’t just about being tired.
It’s about being stuck in stress mode for too long. (Those of you familiar with our work over at Burnout to JOY have heard me refer to this as a Thermostat - that needs re-setting!

Your (My) physical body has been trying to grab your attention…I’ve had aches, pains, a facial rash and umpteen colds.

A Real-Life Reset (From My Own Life)

But today, I’m on a day off.

And if I’m honest… It’s not just any day off.

It’s coming 2 days before the official launch of the beta version of our Foundation Course—something that has been built with so much heart, energy, and behind-the-scenes effort.

It’s been a year of exponential growth.
Some of it is beautiful… and some of it is uncomfortable and messy..

Learning, stretching, navigating the different approaches of a teacher and a nurse, and finding a way to blend those worlds into something truly meaningful.

And now?

There’s a moment of space.

Not because everything is done…
(because let’s be real—it never is)

But because I choose to pause, safe in the knowledge that I'm ready to greet our Charter Members on Sunday!

And in that pause, I noticed something important:

Even when you love what you’re building…
Even when it’s aligned…Your body still needs a reset.

What a ‘Real Reset’ Actually Means

A true reset isn’t about escaping your life.
It’s about gently bringing your mind and body back into balance.

When you’ve been in chronic stress, your system lives in:

  • Fight (irritability, frustration)
  • Flight (anxiety, restlessness)
  • Freeze (numbness, shutdown)

A reset helps you shift into:

  • Calm
  • Clarity
  • Connection

And the best part?

It doesn’t take hours. It takes intention.

5 Simple Ways to Reset (Even on Your Busiest Days)

1. The 60-Second Nervous System Reset

If you only have one minute, start here.

  • Place both feet on the ground
  • Drop your shoulders
  • Take a slow breath in through your nose
  • Exhale longer than you inhale

Repeat 3–5 times.

This signals safety to your body and begins to downshift stress almost immediately.

2. Step Outside (Even for 2 Minutes)

Nature regulates your nervous system faster than almost anything else.

You don’t need a long walk.

Just:

  • Feel the air on your skin
  • Look at the sky
  • Take one conscious breath

It sounds simple… because it is.
And it works.

3. Do Less (On Purpose)

Burnout often comes from over-functioning.

So instead of asking:
‘What else do I need to do?’

Try asking:
‘What can I release today?’

Even letting go of one non-essential task creates space your body desperately needs.

4. Put Down What Isn’t Yours

If you’re a caregiver, nurse, teacher, or empath…

You are likely carrying more than your share.

Take a moment and ask:

  • Is this mine to hold?
  • Or did I pick this up from someone else?

Visualise handing it back, or letting it go.

You can still care…
Without carrying it all.

5. Create a “Micro-Moment” of Joy

Joy doesn’t have to be big to be powerful.

It can be:

  • Your favourite song in the car
  • A warm drink in silence (I had my Starbucks Chai Tea Latte this morning!)
  • A genuine laugh with someone

These small moments aren’t insignificant.

They are regulation.

They remind your body that life is not just stress and survival.

The Truth About Resetting

Today, my reset doesn’t look perfect.

It looks like slowing down.
Letting the momentum settle.
Allowing myself to feel the shift after achieving such a big milestone.

No rushing into the next thing.
No immediately fill the space.

Just… being.

(And this blog is flowing!)

You don’t need to earn rest.
You don’t need to wait until you’re completely burned out.

And you don’t need hours of free time to begin again.

You need small, consistent moments of coming back to yourself.

Because every time you pause…
Every time you breathe…
Every time you choose not to carry what isn’t yours…

You are shifting from burnout…
Back toward joy.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected lately…

Start small.

Choose one of these resets today.

Not perfectly.
Not all of them.
Just one.

Because healing doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from creating space to feel, to breathe, and to be.
