Your Nervous System Learns Through Repetition, Not Perfection - Why Small Wins Matter More Than You Think

This week, I was a speaker at the Alberta Nurses Association conference in Edmonton. One of the things I found myself emphasising for my captive audience who take more care of others than themselves, was that they CAN incorporate Nervous System Healing into their days. I caught myself telling them, 'You do not need to hide in the supply room for 20 minutes to get regulated - all you need is 60 seconds between patients, or at the med-cart'

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing from or preventing burnout is the belief that transformation needs to happen in huge, dramatic ways.

We think:

  • We need a full life reset,
  • A week-long retreat,
  • The perfect morning routine,
  • Or hours of meditation and self-care every day...

But here’s your light bulb moment:

"Your nervous system does not heal through intensity.

It heals through repetition"

This small statement changes everything.

When you’ve experienced prolonged stress, overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, or burnout, your nervous system adapts to survival mode.

The brain becomes highly efficient at recognising:

  • pressure,
  • urgency,
  • overworking,
  • hypervigilance,
  • and emotional suppression.

Over time, these states become familiar.

And the nervous system will always choose what feels familiar before what feels peaceful.

Even if the familiar state is exhausting.

One of my favourite quotes in Burnout to Joy is:

"Your nervous system will always choose a Familiar hell, over an unfamiliar heaven"

Here's the Science Behind It

Your brain is constantly creating neural pathways based on repeated experiences.

This process is called neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire itself over time.

The more often you repeat a behaviour, thought pattern, or emotional response, the stronger that pathway becomes.

Think of it like walking through a field:

  • the more often you walk the same route,
  • the easier the path becomes to follow.

Burnout creates well-worn survival pathways. But healing creates new ones, and those new pathways are built through small repeated experiences of safety.

Not perfection.

Not intensity.

REPETITION

Why “Little and Often” Works Better

Many people try to heal their nervous systems with occasional big acts of self-care:

  • one yoga class a week (don't get me wrong! One of my besties is a Yoga Teacher, and she is doing pioneering work out there in our community for teachers (Maria - that's a shout-out to you!)
  • one massage every few months(I have RMT's in my circle too...)
  • one weekend off after months of exhaustion...

While those things can absolutely help, the nervous system learns more effectively through consistency.

Why?

Because the brain learns through pattern recognition. Tiny moments repeated throughout the day send the message:

✨ “I am safe.”
✨ “I can slow down.”
✨ “I need to STOP staying in survival mode.”

This is how:

  • 60 seconds of conscious breathing several times a day (Try the Box Breath)
  • taking proper breaks (and use them to your advantage!
  • Consciously unclenching your jaw and allowing your shoulders to drop
  • drinking water (telling your nervous system it is safe to rest)
  • stepping outside for sunlight
  • speaking kindly to yourself!
  • Try the 321 orienting exercise (pause and notice 3 shapes, 2 colours and 1 pleasurable item)

These can become profoundly healing over time.

Small actions, repeated consistently, begin to reprogram the nervous system.

The Nervous System will ALWAYS Choose Familiarity

Here’s another important truth:

Your nervous system may actually resist rest at first.

Not because you’re failing.

But because stress has become familiar.

For many stressed, pre-burnout and burned-out people, slowing down can initially feel:

  • uncomfortable,
  • unsafe,
  • unproductive,
  • or even anxiety-provoking.

This is incredibly common.

The nervous system is not asking:

“What’s healthiest?”

It’s asking:

“What’s familiar?”

That’s why healing often requires gentle repetition and patience.

You are teaching your body that safety is possible again.

Small Wins Are Nervous System Wins

This is why celebrating small wins matters so much.

Every small supportive action is evidence that you are creating a new internal experience.

The nervous system responds to:

  • consistency,
  • compassion,
  • predictability,
  • and safety.

Not punishment.

Not shame.

Not pushing harder.

What Actually Helps?

Instead of waiting until burnout forces you to stop completely, begin practising micro-moments of regulation throughout your day.

Examples:

  • placing your hand on your chest and taking 3 slow breaths,
  • stretching your shoulders between tasks,
  • stepping outside for fresh air,
  • allowing yourself to sit down while drinking your coffee,
  • listening to calming music,
  • noticing moments of joy,
  • or simply pausing before reacting.

Tiny shifts.

Repeated often.

That is how healing becomes sustainable.

Final Thoughts

You do not need to overhaul your entire life overnight to begin healing. Your nervous system is always practising something.

The question is:

What are we reinforcing?

Because every small moment of self-support becomes a vote for a new way of living.

And over time…

Those small wins become your new foundation.
