Finding Joy in the Little Things: A December Gratitude Guide
Dec 07, 2025
'Tis the Season of Celebration
(and Overwhelm)
December is a universal season of celebration. Across cultures and religions, people decorate, gather, share meals, exchange gifts, light candles, honour traditions, and bring symbols of joy into their homes. No matter where you look in the world, December asks us to pause and notice the light — literally and metaphorically — in our lives.
But here’s the honest truth:
While this season is supposed to be joyful, it often comes bundled with pressure. We try to be festive, generous, and cheerful… yet we’re overwhelmed by money, time, expectations, and sometimes even our own sense of worth.
Sometimes joy feels like something everyone else has figured out.
But the quiet truth is this:
Joy doesn’t disappear — it just gets buried under the weight of everything we’re carrying.

And this is where gratitude becomes powerful.
Gratitude isn’t an emotion. It’s a decision.
A gentle, intentional choice to notice what’s good — even when life feels heavy.
This season, I invite you to notice, to acknowledge, and to say thank you, even when your to-do list grows faster than your energy reserves.
April's Holiday Gratitude Tradition
A few years ago, I adopted a gratitude ritual that still makes me smile:
I thank my Christmas tree.
Yes — out loud.
I thank it for the joy it brings people who walk into our home.
I thank it for the fresh pine smell that fills the room.
I thank it for the ornaments — each one a tiny time capsule:
- My childhood ice-skating ornament
- The passed-down ornaments from generations
- The ones my children made with their tiny hands
- The ornaments I purchased during my travels
- The one inherited from my mother’s fabulous collection
Your own tradition may look completely different from mine — a candle you light, a meal you prepare, a spiritual practice, or even a quiet moment at the end of the day. What matters isn’t what it is, but that it reminds you of what’s good.
These moments of gratitude remind me of something simple but profound:
I don’t need more things.
I just need more noticing.
And each time I pause to say thank you, I feel something shift — a tiny lift, a spark, a softening.
This is gratitude doing its quiet work: clearing space inside us so joy can rise again.
The Shift Between 'Before' and 'After'
There’s something magical about a Christmas tree’s transformation.
When I first pick it out — standing in the cold among rows of evergreens — it’s beautiful, but simple—just branches and possibilities.

But once it comes home…
Once the lights are woven in,
Once the ornaments find their place,
Once the room fills with that fresh pine scent…
It becomes something else entirely.
A memory keeper.
A storyteller.
A source of quiet joy.
A reminder of everything that has meaning in my life.

Watching this transformation reminds me:
Gratitude transforms us in the same way.
It takes what feels ordinary — or even heavy — and turns it into something meaningful.
But here’s the truth we often avoid:
Even though gratitude is simple…
When we’re overwhelmed, it can be the hardest thing to reach for.
And that’s exactly where the next part of this story begins.
When Gratitude Feels Hard
During the holidays, you may feel pulled in every direction:
Buy more. Give more. Do more. Be more.
When stress rises, and your emotional bandwidth stretches thin, gratitude can feel out of reach.
But that’s precisely when it matters most.
Because gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is okay.
It’s about noticing the moments that remind you you’re still human — and still capable of feeling joy, even in small doses.
Slowly, these moments begin to add up.
They widen your breath.
They soften your shoulders.
They reconnect you to what’s good.
This is how gratitude leads you back to joy —
Not all at once,
But piece by piece.
Tips to Keep Joy in Your Holiday Spirit
These practices won’t erase overwhelm.
They won’t fix your workload or the pressure of the season.
But they will help you reclaim small pockets of peace — moments where gratitude can land, and joy can grow.
1. The “quiet pause” between tasks
When you slow down for a breath, gently remind yourself:
“This tiny moment counts.”
2. A genuine smile from a student or patient
Try saying to yourself:
“That smile meant connection — and connection is why I chose this work.”
3. Light coming through a window in the morning
Invite yourself to think:
“There is beauty today — even before I begin.”
4. Small unexpected kindnesses
Let yourself notice and say:
“Goodness still exists around me.”
5. Hearing laughter in the hallway
Allow yourself to remember:
“Joy is happening here, even in the middle of stress.”
6. The feel of warm water when washing your hands
Offer a grounding reminder:
“In this second, I am safe. I am present.”
7. A moment of competence
Say to yourself with honesty:
“This is me making a difference.”
8. A quiet drive home
Gently think:
“This is my transition space. I can release the day here.”
9. A soft blanket, warm socks, or your pet greeting you
Whisper a moment of gratitude:
“I am cared for. I have little joys right here.”
10. Finishing one small thing
Celebrate the tiny win by saying:
“One thing is done. That’s movement forward.”
The Law of Attention
What you place your attention on grows stronger in your life.
The more you notice, the more beauty you will see.
What you appreciate appreciates — and you get more of it.
And the best part?
Gratitude doesn’t cost anything.
Not a cent.
Just a moment of attention and intention.
The Law of Attention reminds us that what we focus on becomes more present in our lives — not just mentally, but biologically. When we repeatedly direct our attention toward stress, our nervous system strengthens stress pathways. But when we pause to notice beauty, safety, and moments of gratitude, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, creating more calm, presence, and joy. What we appreciate truly appreciates — and through small, consistent moments of noticing, we can rewire our inner world from survival to thriving.
